How does red clover work as one of the menopause natural remedies? The extract of the red clover contains isoflavones. These chemicals mimic the hormone in the body called estrogen. Isoflavones mimic the natural estrogen found in the body and act to re balance the hormonal system.

Is there any evidence that it works? Studies carried out in Japan (Jerri et al, 1999) have not been conclusive. Some studies suggest that it may have a reducing effect on hot flashes however, the largest study, showed no such effect. Even though the evidence is not conclusive, there are millions of women worldwide who use red clover and claim it helps during the menopause phase.

The menopause is an extremely difficult phase in the life for many women. The symptoms of menopause can have devastating effects on relationships as well as personal well being. Black cohosh is a member of the buttercup family. This root has been used by Native Americans as a remedy for menstrual cramps and hot flashes, arthritis, muscle pain, sore throat, cough and indigestion. Currently, black cohosh is used as a natural remedy for hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, vaginal dryness and other symptoms that can occur during menopause. 

How does Black Cohosh work? The exact way in which it works to alleviate hot flushes amd night sweats is not known. However, a compound recently identified in black cohosh (fukinolic acid) was shown to have estrogenic activity. This may explain why it  has been very effective at alleviating symptoms of decreasng estrogen levels. A study in 2001 by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stated that black cohosh may be helpful in the short-term (less than 6 months) for menopausal hot flashes.

The side effects of black cohosh include indigestion, headache, nausea, perspiration, vomiting, heaviness in the legs, weight gain and  low blood pressure. It is very important to first consult your doctor before taking black cohosh especially if you are on any other medication.
